On November 1 SSU staff and students organized the events commemorating the 150th anniversary of the architect and builder of the university buildings Karl Mufke.
In the morning the SSU delegation laid floral tributes to his grave. It was headed by Rector A.N. Chumachenko, Head of Priority Projects and Programs Prof. Ye.G. Yelina, Vice-Rector for Youth Policy and Educational Work A.V. Golovchenko, Vice-Rector for Research Work A.A. Koronovskiy, Vice-Rector for Educational and Organizational Work I.G. Malinskiy, Vice-Rector for Secondary Professional Education and Social Work O.Ye. Nesterova, and Dean of the Faculty of Physics V.M. Anikin.
Students organized excursions around the campus entitled “It was built by Karl Mufke…” and told the people about the architect’s biography.
At first, it was planned to build the SSU campus at the Sokolovaya Mountain so that the university could be seen from different places, and it would be possible to have a look at the Volga River at any moment. However, that territory was slip-off, therefore, the City Duma ordered to build the university at Moscow Square.
The first SSU Rector V.I. Razumovskiy chose K.L. Mufke because he had already become a popular architect well-known for his honesty.
In spring 1910 the construction works started. The construction committee was headed by the first university Rector, Professor V.I. Razumovskiy and Chief Architect K.L. Mufke. Almost 3 months after that 4 university buildings were built which have become one of the Saratov sightseeings due to their classic style. The construction brigade also built the surgeon, ENT, and therapeutic clinics in the medical campus.
The architect was inspired by the architecture of buildings in Saint-Petersburg, where he studied, and Europe. There he paid the attention to elements and used that knowledge in his practice.
Later on Bldg. V (built in 1952 by an architect N.K. Usov) and the Regional Scientific Library (built in 1957 by an architect Yu.V. Istomin) matched the ensemble.
Students learnt about it and many other facts during the excursions.
In Bldg. III students could take a picture with banners depicting K.L. Mufke wearing clothes from the beginning of the 20th century. You can look at all the photos in the public of the SGUshchyonka journal in the VKontakte.
