On Day of Naming University after Chernyshevsky, SSU Staff and Students Honoured His Memory
The staff and students of Saratov State University honoured Chernyshevsky’s memory on the day of naming of the university after an outstanding writer and thinker.
October 4, 1923 is one of the SSU memorable dates. Exactly 100 years ago, by the decision of the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR, the university was named after Nicholas Chernyshevsky, who at one time had made a great contribution to the development of pedagogy and advocated for the availability of education.
Chernyshevsky did a lot to ensure that a university would appear in Saratov. He paid great attention to education and assured that the education of humanity depended on the education of young people.
On this memorable date, Rector Aleksei Chumachenko, SSU Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Igor Malinskii, Vice-Rector for Youth Policy and Organisational Work Anton Golovchenko gathered at SSU Student Square, where Chernyshevsky’s statue had been installed. The celebration ceremony was also attended by the university students and the staff of the Chernyshevsky Estate Museum – Director Elena Manova, Academic Secretary Aleksei Semyonov, and Chief Curator of the estate Elena Rizayeva.
Director of the SSU History Museum Larisa Shipilova in her opening speech recalled Chernyshevsky’s role in the history of the university and the country. After that, flowers were laid at the statue of the writer. The event continued at the memorial to Chernyshevsky at the Resurrection Cemetery, where the first-year students of the Institute of History and International Relations and SSU activists honoured the memory of the writer and social activist.
From October 4 to 5, the lectures on his life and work are held at the university. The Scientific Library has prepared the exhibition for the anniversary date.
