An article about the history of space exploration at SSU has been published in the Research City section. Space Research in SSU is about IKOR-M radiometers, radio telescopes and polarimeters, about the current state of space science at the university and the work of the SSU Society of Astronomy Devotees.

The most important achievement of SSU in the field of space research was the development and creation under the leadership of Professor Yurii Sklyarov (1931-2014) of satellite equipment for measuring the components of the Earth's radiation balance, which is successfully operating in space at the present time.

In 2009 and 2014, the Meteor-M hydrometeorological satellites No. 1 and No. 2 were put into orbit. In their composition, they had IKOR-M radiometers — these are devices for measuring solar radiation reflected from the Earth's surface. In 2011, the solar constant meter ISP-2M started working on the geostationary satellite "Electro-L". The chief designer of these devices was Yu.A. Sklyarov. The information received by the instruments is still of great interest for studying the climate of our planet by specialists.

Today, the university is turning to space research in the educational and scientific process. In 2008, an initiative group of students and teachers decided to create the SSU Society of Astronomy Devotees.
