Photo Exhibition on SSU During the Great Patriotic War Opened in Bldg. 10
On February 26, in Bldg. 10, there was opened the photo exhibition dedicated to the life of SSU during the war and the university's contribution to the victory in the Great Patriotic War. The first to come to look at the archival footage were SSU students and members of the headquarters of the university student brigades.
The exhibition was organised by Yurii Varfolomeyev, Professor of the Department of Russian History and Archaeology, and Ulyana Rizina, a master’s degree student at the Faculty of Law.
‘The idea of the project originated a long time ago. This is a grant project that we implemented at the Khopyor youth regional forum. We thought it was important for students to know the historical environment and remember which events took place in our country during the fateful years,’ Ulyana Rizina said at the beginning of the event.
Yurii Varfolomeyev noted that the exhibition is devoted to the people who brought the victory closer. More than 600 university teaching staff members and students volunteered from Saratov State University to the front, including Rector Daniil Luchinin, Dean of the Faculty of History Boris Zevin, Associate Professor Nikolai Baranskii, and many others.
‘Even those people who had military exemption and could officially be released from mobilisation on formal grounds went into battle at the calling of their hearts,’ Yurii Varfolomeyev stressed.
The discoveries of SSU researchers helped the Soviet army during the war. Led by Professor Boris Mozharovskii, the scientific group carried out a few examinations, due to which the deposits of phosphorous clays became used in the production of electricity at SarDPS. Pyotr Golubkov's research group developed an automatic fuse for anti-tank bottles with a combustible mixture.
Yurii Varfolomeyev also spoke about the close cooperation of SSU with Leningrad State University. Despite the difficulties of the war, people had a craving for knowledge of art and literature. ‘For several years, there has been friendly, well-coordinated, and solidary work in both research and public life, many joint projects were implemented. Historians, philologists, and scientists of other disciplines held lectures for residents of the city, and even in such difficult times educational meetings were a great success,’ he said.
At the exhibition, the students learnt about outstanding people and important events from the history of Saratov State University during the war. The stands also reflect the contribution of SSU to the Great Victory. The exhibition will be working till April.
