On the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow, June 22, in the campus flowers were laid at the monument to the SSU and SSMU staff and students who died during the Great Patriotic War. The ceremony was attended by Rector of Saratov State University Aleksei Chumachenko, vice-rectors, and members of the SSU Council of Veterans.

Students also came to honour the memory of the soldiers. Together with a delegation of the university staff, they laid flowers at the monument. A minute of silence preceded the ceremony dedicated to the memorable date.

‘Today, the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow is commemorated in the country – on this day, 82 years ago, the Great Patriotic War began, which became the most destructive in the history of our state. The time 12.15 p.m. was not chosen by chance, it was at this moment on June 22, 1941 that an appeal to the citizens of the Soviet Union about the attack of Nazi Germany was broadcast. Today, we pay tribute to those who died and did not see the Victory, so that their feat would not be forgotten, and the tragedy would not be repeated,’ said Vice-Rector for Youth Policy and Organisational Work Anton Golovchenko.

As part of the commemorative events in the morning, SSU Rector Aleksei Chumachenko took part in the ceremony of laying flowers at the monument to the Warrior-Liberator. It was held at the Resurrection Cemetery in Saratov. Traditionally, representatives of the city and regional authorities participated in it.

A minute of silence was announced without unnecessary official words. During it, cadets came out with portraits of heroes who fell on the battlefields of the Great Patriotic War. At the end of the ceremony, the priests served a memorial service. To the sounds of the Russian, the soldiers of the honour guard marched around the monument and fired a triple volley from a machine.

To remind, since 1996, Russia has celebrated the Day of Remembrance and Mourning on June 22. This date was set in order to honour the memory of the victims and pay tribute to all those who had fought for the freedom and independence of our country in those tragic years. On June 22, 2023, at 12.15 p.m. (MSC), the Minute of Silence was held in the Russian Federation.
