On the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow, June 22, flowers were laid at the Memorial to the staff and students of SSU and SSMU who died during the Great Patriotic War on the campus.
"Today we recall the names of our colleagues based on the materials and documents that preserve the history of their lives. Those of them who returned from the war have been part of our team for a long time, among them are heroes of the Soviet Union, knights of the Order of Glory. If the memory of front-line soldiers, home front workers, blockade runners is alive, then our country will also be alive. It is important that the memories of the glorious exploits of our countrymen remain with us and are passed down from generation to generation," said the Rector of SSU A.N. Chumachenko.
The participants of the ceremony laid flowers at the Memorial as a sign of gratitude for the heroic feat of the staff and students who gave their lives for the Motherland during the difficult war years.
The end of the solemn meeting was a minute of silence. The all-Russian action was held in all regions of the country. It became a symbolic reminder that on this day, June 22, 1941, nazi Germany invaded the territory of the USSR from the western borders of the country without warning. Thus began the Great Patriotic War, which lasted almost four years and ended with the unconditional victory of the Red Army. According to approximate estimates, about 27 million citizens of the Soviet Union, including the military and civilian population, died during the war.
