From 31 May to 2 June in Krylatskoye there took place the traditional international competition – the Grand Moscow Regatta (GMR). This year SSU students-rowers represented the Saratov Region and the university not only in the master race but within the second stage of the Student Rowing League Summer Championship.
It was considered that if athletes won the Grand Moscow Regatta, they would become prize winners of the World Championship.
Unpredictably for their competitors our men’s eight team became one of the top-10 best teams at the first stage of the Student Rowing League Summer Championship in Saint-Petersburg at the beginning of May.
Then the athletes repeated their best results in the 2000 m race, which they had shown last autumn, and in the finals they outrowed the eminent teams of St Petersburg University, Pavlov First Saint Petersburg State Medical University, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Saint-Petersburg Mining University, Lesgaft National State University of Physical Education, Sport and Health, Saint Petersburg State Forest Technical University, and their persistent competitors – the first-string rowers from Moscow Aviation Institute.
‘The race was crucial and difficult. Five teams came to the finish line almost at the same time! It should be noted that SSU has outrowed all the league elite,’ commented Coach of the SSU Rowing Team Ivan A. Fufayev.
Our students showed excellent results not only in the student but the master races as well.
A 1st-year student of the Institute of Sports and Physical Training Konstantin Stasyuk (coached by Sergei V. Ignatov) won the gold medal in 500 m men's quadruple sculls and two silver medals in the 2000 m men's pair and the 2000 m men's double sculls races.
A master student of the Institute of Sports and Physical Training Natalia Guzhinova (coached by Andrei P Sinitsyn) won three silver medals at the 2019 Grand Moscow Regatta – in the lightweight women's double sculls and the lightweight women's quadruple sculls races, and together with another 1st-year student of the Institute of Sports and Physical Training Arina Mityakina (coached by Ivan A. Fufayev) in the women's pair race.
The rowing club athletes will train hard because the next league competition will take place on 13-15 September in Sestroretsk, the Leningrad Region. Therefore, they must do their best in order to become one of the prize winners.
