In Memory of Evgenii Seleznyov

On September 17, 2021, Evgenii Seleznyov, Chair of the SSU Department of Dynamic Modelling and Biomedical Engineering, passed away. He was only 61 years old. The reason is simple and common today – acute pneumonia caused by coronavirus infection, but this makes parting with him only more painful for all of us.

Evgenii Seleznyov was an outstanding experimentalist, a specialist in analogue electronics savvy in the theory of oscillations and radio engineering. His early work on dynamic chaos-based noise generators, done under the supervision of Boris Bezruchko, is rightfully considered one of the outstanding achievements of the Saratov school of radiophysics. These works were appreciated in the leading scientific and industrial centres of the USSR (close to defence topics to some extent hindered their widespread popularisation), and subsequent joint work with Sergei Kuznetsov on the experimental implementation of strange chaotic attractors earned global fame. For the department staff, which he headed in 2015, he was not only a leader – for many of them he was a good friend, mentor and, in general, a person who was always ready to help. Sincere love for people, honesty, kindness and at the same time adherence to principles in important issues when it came to justice – these are character traits that are rare but very necessary today. Evgenii Seleznyov’s whole life was connected with the university from his student days to his last days: he studied at the Faculty of Physics at the Department of Electronics, taught at the Department of Nonlinear Physics of the Faculty of Nonlinear Processes (he was Deputy Dean for Research), then at the Faculty of Nano- and Biomedical Technologies and at the Institute of Physics, where he worked as a professor and chair of the department, read a course on electricity and magnetism and lectures on analogue electronics, conducted numerous laboratory studies, was the author of several unique installations.

In the Saratov branch of the V.A. Kotelnikov Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics of RAS (until 2016 the department was based in a branch) Evgenii Seleznyov climbed up the career ladder from an engineer to a deputy director for science (from 2010 to 2020) and Chief Researcher, for the last year he headed the SF-7 Laboratory of Theoretical Nonlinear Dynamics, for a long time chaired the Labour Union that actually helped the employees, was in the Presidium of the RAS Labour Union. At conferences and holidays, Evgenii Seleznyov, until the last day, was always the life and soul of the party, already as a professor he performed for students, played the guitar perfectly, and knew many songs.

Dear Evgenii Seleznyov, bright be your memory, we will always miss you!
