Commemorative plaque for Professor Yu.A. Skliarov opened in Saratov Planetarium on October 16. He was a great Russian scientists in astronomy and Earth radiation balance, engineer of sun radiation detectors, SSU Department of Meteorology and Climatology Chair, member of International Higher Education Academy of Science. SSU administration, Yu.A. Skliarov’s friends and relatives attended the ceremony.
Director of Saratov Branch of “Knowledge”Society A.M. Tkachev opened the ceremony. “We are opening a commemorative plaque in the memory of a man who dedicated his life to education. He helped to open our planetarium. I hope today’s event would attract not only school
SSU Rector, Prof. A.N. Chumachenko greeted the participants. “We remember great moments and great people like Yu.A. Skliarov. This event would print the outstanding scientist’s name in our memory and our hearts”. A.N. Chumachenko thanked everyone who helped in naming the planetarium after Yu.A. Skliarov. “Stars he studied would serve as a memory of him for many students and pupils”.
Yu.A. Skliarov’s daughter also attended the ceremony. “I am very proud that the planetarium is named after my father who dedicated his life to science and contributed a lot to Saratov region”.
SSU Department of Solid Body Physics Chair, Prof. D.A. Usanov shared his memories of Yu.A. Skliarov: “Today’s meeting is in memory of our colleague who spent his life promoting knowledge in Saratov. Over 30 years he worked designing devises that were parts of Earth satellites and provided new information on hydrometeorology. He always used his knowledge to implement them and share”.
SSU Faculty of Geography Dean V.Z. Makarov also spoke at the ceremony. “This is a milestone event. We managed to do the impossible, to perpetuate Yu.A. Skliarov’s name. This is the nest monument to him as a scientists and a colleague”.
Saratov University veterans have great memories of Yu.A. Skliarov. Associate professor of the Department of Meteorology and Climatology S.N. Lapina shared: “I saw the opening of Planetarium in this building. Prof. Skliarov helped to get a telescope for the planetarium. Today’s event gives him true credit”.
In the end of the ceremony, planetarium staff gave an excursion for the participants.
Yu.A. Skliarov (27.01.1931-19.06.2014) was a specialist in actinometry, pyrheliometry, satellite climatology, solar-terrestrial relationships. In 1969 and 2008 he founded laboratories in astronomy and geophysics, special laboratory to study Earth radiation balance. Yu.A. Skliarov was a chief engineer of satellite detectors. He also was a poet and published two collections of poems. He was awarded Korolev’s medal for designing space study equipment, had lots of national and regional awards.
