On June 3, the Stolypin. Saratov research conference was opened in Saratov. It was initiated by the Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin. The plenary session was held at Saratov State Law Academy.
The conference is timed to the 160th anniversary of the birth of Pyotr Stolypin, an outstanding Russian statesman whose reforms made a significant contribution to the development of Saratov Region and the entire Russian state. His phenomenal managerial talent, shown in various government positions, his loyalty to the Fatherland and a firm focus on the development and prosperity of Russia inspired the organisers to hold the event. SSU was represented at the forum by Rector Aleksei Chumachenko, the vice-rectors, and the professors.
SSLA Rector Ekaterina Ilgova read the congratulatory address of the Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin. ‘Almost all scientific schools in our region began their journey with Emperor Nikolas University, opened thanks to Pyotr Stolypin. Today these are the leading universities of our country. The personality of Stolypin himself has not been sufficiently investigated. We have an opportunity to analyse Stolypin's decisions and actions, their consequences, characterize the events of that time, and share our opinions. This will help to form an objective understanding of his role in the life of our state.’
The First Deputy Minister of Education of Saratov Region Elena Nerozya spoke on behalf of words Acting Governor Roman Busargin. ‘Our city and region are closely connected with Pyotr Stolypin. Therefore, the project dedicated to his legacy is of high importance. The sites of the scientific conference, which is beginning its work, will undoubtedly become a place of vivid discussions about the past, the present, and the future of Russia. I want to thank our universities and other organisations for their active participation in the project.’
Mayor Mikhail Isayev in his speech pointed out that the name of Stolypin occupies a special place in the history of the Russian Empire. ‘It was in Saratov Region that he began to implement his reform projects. During his work, Saratov became the fourth dynamically developing city in Russia. Educational and cultural institutions of Saratov bear his name,’ he said.
At the plenary session, a report was made by Yurii Varfolomeyev, Professor of the Department of Russian History and Archaeology, the Institute of History and International Relations, SSU. It was dedicated to the last attempted assassination of Stolypin, who at that time held the post of the Chairman of the Council of Ministers and the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Russian Empire. The professor dwelled on the details of the murder investigation and the events in Russia that entailed that political crime.
After the plenary session, the conference participants continued their work at more than 20 sites, which were opened in six universities in the region: SSU, SSLA, PIM, SSAU, SSMU, and SSTU.
They discussed the development of our state at the present stage and using our historical experience. The platforms are represented by open lectures, discussions, panel discussions, quizzes, and other events.
