18th International Saratov Winter School “Modern Problems of Function Theory and Their Applications” opens at SSU on January, 28. It is organized by National Research Saratov State University, Lomonosov Moscow State University and Steklov Mathematical Institute.

The event was hosted by the Chair of the Department of Differential Equations and Applied Mathematics A.P. Khromov who wished success to his colleagues and gave word to organization committee chair RAS member B.S. Kashin. Prof. Kashin thanked the school participants for their great interest to mathematics which needs developing: “Our science finds new applications, function theory gains bigger influence. We need to support this work in Russia where many of its disciplines were founded”.

He also thanked Prof. A.P. Khromov and Saratov University workers who organized the international winter school and made it famous in Russia and abroad.

Saratov State University vice-rector for organizational and analytical work A.V. Stalmakhov welcomed the conference participants. He passed along the wishes of good work from SSU Rector A.N. Chumachenko and suggested dedicating the school to the 70th anniversary of the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics. A.V. Stalmakhov remembered Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics Dean A.A. Privalov who started the winter school back in 1982.

Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics Dean A.M. Zakharov presented statistics. SSU is number 11 in Mathematics among Russian universities in discipline ranking. Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics employs 27 Doctors of science and has the biggest state-funded student enrollment. “It is great that most faculty life is connected to winter schools. It is important that every year we see young people here – it means the name “school” is still correct”, said A.M. Zakharov and added that participation of students and their scientific advisors in the project shows continuity of generations.

RAS corresponding member S.V. Koniagin wished the participants new ideas, great work and rest.

Organization committee secretary, Chair of the Department of Functions and Approximations Theory S.P. Sidorov talked about winter school participation. The school includes scientisit from Saratov, Moscow, Vologda, Volgograd, Voronezh, Dolgoprudny, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Izhevsk, Makhachkala, Oziersk, Lipetsk, Petrozavodsk, St. Petersburg, Smolensk, Gorny Klyuch, Rostov-on-Don, Tomsk, and Samara.

At the plenary meeting, the participants heard reports by the leading Russian mathematicians. A.P. Khromov presented his work “Fourier Method for Wave Equations” that is a continuation of his last year talk.

RAS corresponding member S.V. Koniagin talked about “Sustainable Function Recovery based on Its Fourier Constant”.

The first day finished with the lecture by RAS member B.S. Kashin on «Kolmogov’s "Chaining"». He explained that “chaining” method is widely used today by Russian and Western scientist alike, but Kolmogorov, Andrei Nikolaevich, who developed the method back in the 1930s without publishing the results, is not always quoted.

18th International Saratov Winter School “Modern Problems of Function Theory and Their Applications” is supported by the Russian Foundation fort Basic Research grant. Collection of works by the school participants was published in advance.

About 100 participants will present their work at the conference. They will also have a tour around Saratov and visit Radishev Saratov State Art Museum on January, 31. The school closes on February, 2.

Full program of the International school is available at the official website.
