SSU President, winner of the State Award of the Russian Federation in science and technology, Honorary Worker of higher professional education, Knight of the Order of Friendship, Chair of the Department of Mathematic Theory of Elasticity and Biomechanics, Professor Leonid Kossovich celebrates his 75th birthday. The staff of Saratov State University cordially congratulates the professor on his anniversary!
His life is inextricably connected with SSU – this countdown can be conducted since 1966, when Leonid Kossovich entered the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics. After graduation, he worked as a senior engineer in the Laboratory of Mathematical Methods of the SSU Research Institute of Geology. In 1973, he entered the postgraduate course of Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics, and successfully presented his PhD thesis. In 1984, after presenting his doctoral dissertation, Leonid Kossovich was elected as Chair of the Department of Elasticity Theory, SSU, (today – the Department of Mathematic Theory of Elasticity and Biomechanics). In 1993, he became Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics and worked in this position for ten years.
From 2003 to October 2013, Leonid Kossovich worked as SSU rector. During his leadership, the university stepped into a new stage of development – the university won the competition for innovative projects and acquired the status of a national research university.
In 2013, he was elected to the post of SSU President.
The professor has been actively doing the research for many years. His research includes asymptotic methods, oscillations and propagation of unsteady waves, dynamics of thin-walled elastic and viscoelastic structures, biomechanics, as well as one-dimensional and two-dimensional nanomaterials and nanostructures. He has many authoritative scientific publications on his account. Leonid Kossovich personally and in co-authorship with colleagues and students has published more than 200 research and education-to-methodology papers. The professor heads a research team that develops a system for supporting medical decision-making in medicine of the pelvic-vertebral complex, and a research group that deals with new non-woven materials created at SSU for military and industrial spheres.
In addition to administrative and scientific duties, he is actively engaged in social work. From 2016 to 2021, he was a deputy of the Saratov City Duma.
These days, Leonid Kossovich is leaving the post of the president of the university, which will give him the opportunity to focus on research and the implementation of its results.
