Athletes Andrei Zhyvayev and Philip Torishnyi Won 9 Gold Medals in Deaflympics

The students of the Institute of Sports and Physical Training Andrei Zhivayev and Philip Torishnyi became winners in several disciplines at the We Are Together. Sports I International Summer Deaflympics, which were held in Ufa from July 23 to August 2.

The geography of the first Summer Deaflympic Games was extensive – more than 1,500 athletes from 30 countries came to the competitions – Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kenya, Iran, Iraq, Spain, Israel, Turkey, the USA, Brazil, Bahrain, Vietnam, France, the Philippines, and others.

The competition programme consisted of 21 sports disciplines. It should be noted that more than 500 judges, 50 sign language interpreters, and 210 specially trained volunteers were involved in the games.

The students of the 4th-year of the Institute of Sports and Physical Training, Honoured Masters of Sports Andrei Zhivaev and Philip Torishnyi represented by Saratov State University and the region. In total, the athletes won 9 gold and 3 silver medals in swimming.

Andrei Zhivayev won gold medals becoming the best at in 50, 100, and 200 m freestyle, as well as gold medals as part of the relay team – in 4×100 m freestyle, 4×100 m mixed freestyle, and 4×200 m freestyle. In addition, he won two silver medals in the 50 m butterfly in and in the combined 4×100 m relay.

Philip Torishnyi became the winner at 400, 800, and 1500 m freestyle, won a gold medal as part of the 4×200 m freestyle relay team and a silver one in the 4×100 m freestyle relay.

According to the results of the games, the rating of medals was published. In the overall standings, Russia has the absolute majority of awards – 546, of which – 211 gold, 189 silver, and 146 bronze ones. Belarus is on the second place, and Kenya is on the third. More details can be found here.

The We Are Together. Sports I International Summer Deaflympics was organised by the Russian Ministry of Sports with the participation of the All-Russian Sports Federation of Deaf Sports and the Government of the Republic of Bashkortostan.
