On March 3, the #Ushinsky200 quiz was held at the Faculty of Psychological, Pedagogical, and Special Needs Education, SSU, for the anniversary of one of the founders of Russian scientific pedagogy, a writer Konstantin Ushinsky.
On this occasion, students of pedagogical education courses gathered in SSU Building 12. The teams from six SSU educational units competed in the intellectual contest: the Institutes of Arts, Philology and Journalism, the Faculties of Computer Science and Information Technologies, Foreign Languages and Language Teaching Methods, Psychological, Pedagogical, and Special Needs Education, and the Faculty of Philosophy.
Numerous guests were greeted by volunteers with signposts. Teachers and students examined the stand dedicated to the Konstantin Ushinsky’s mentors. In addition, quotes from the works of the teacher of all teachers were placed on the information poster.
In the auditorium where the quiz was held, classical music was played in a modern performance, creating a special atmosphere for the players and emphasizing the inextricable connection of the modern era with the time when Ushinsky lived and worked.
The jury of the quiz included Dean of the Faculty of Psychological, Pedagogical, and Special Needs Education Tatyana Firsova, Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Language Teaching Methods Svetlana Shilova, Associate Professor of the Department of Information Systems and Educational Technologies Olga Litvinova, Associate Professor of the Department of Theology and Religious Studies, the Faculty of Philosophy, Irina Kutyreva, and Associate Professor of the Department of Speech Therapy and Psycholinguistics Tanzilya Rudzinskaya.
In her welcoming speech, Tatyana Firsova noted the high importance of Ushinsky’s role for all future generations of teachers. ‘Today, we have gathered at this intellectual competition for a reason – it was on this day 200 years ago that the teacher of all teachers, great and unique Konstantin Ushinsky, was born. In this room, there are those who have chosen for themselves a difficult but interesting path of a teacher and mentor, a friend and a guiding star for their students. Konstantin Ushinsky said that if people chose the career that he or she liked, then they would definitely be happy. I hope that you have chosen the teaching profession following your heart and will be really happy in your future career. Use Ushinsky’s legacy in your future work.’
All questions and tasks of the intellectual contest were dedicated to Konstantin Ushinsky, related to his life and scientific and pedagogical papers. In six rounds, participants answered questions about the era in which the scholar lived, about his research papers and quotations, books for children, and many other facts related to the life of the great teacher.
After the quiz, the participants were asked to make a collage of improvised elements on pedagogy. The teams used quotations and basic provisions from the Ushinsky’s works, which have been up-to-date. The creative task aroused great interest and showed the creative abilities of each student.
According to the results of the quiz, the team of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Language Teaching Methods won, the second place was occupied by the team of the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technologies, and the third place was taken by the team of the Faculty of Philosophy. All participants received valuable prizes from the organisers of the quiz.
The event was held as part of the celebration of the Year of Teachers and Mentors. To remind, for Ushinsky’s anniversary, the editorial staff of the SSU website prepared an article about his research.
