On March 12, Saratov State University hosted All-Russia People’s Front roundtable discussion on spiritual education and Russian identity issues. The meeting was attended by Saratov Region senator, All-Russia People’s Front regional chapter co-chair L.N. Bokova, SSU Rector A.N. Chumachenko, Institute of Philology and Journalism scientific advisor, “Education and Culture as of national identity cornerstones” working party head V.V. Prozorov, regional administration and business community representatives.

Opening the meeting L.N. Bokova mentioned the on-going work on “Education development strategies in the Russian Federation till 2025” project. She said the project has to be clear and simple and “must be implemented”. “Learning and education are essential processes. It is important to prepare the whole system ready to the project realization”. The senator also drew attention to the question whether there is enough films and books for children.

V.V. Prozorov highlighted the sad fact that, for a long a time, education (“vospitanie”) was neglected. Today educational institutions have a lack of teachers and educational workers. To attract specialists it is important to provide good working conditions. “Individual characteristics also play a very important role. They are based on self-respect, self-dignity, knowledge of how to build relationships with other generation, find solutions to difficult situations”, said Prof. Prozorov.

SSU Rector A.N. Chumachenko talked about directions of educational work in the university. “Eduvation and upbringing are both very important. School of tutors works in the university. It is nice when older students help newcomers to adapt to university life. Volunteer work is another important sphere”.

All-Russia People’s Front regional chapter representative, Faculty of Philosophy Dean M.O. Orlov said the strategy has several points that need clarification. He also highlighted the fact that SSU is the only university that provides teachers’ education; so teachers’ education development should be the main part of the strategy.

Department of Psychology Chair E.I. Balakireva talked about the importance of cooperation between university, school and civic organizations. According to her, a teacher should foster learning and education and stimulate project work.

After the presentations, the participants shared their opinions and made their suggestions on the project. For example, they discussed issues of working with disabled children, children from disadvantaged families, teachers’ education, etc.
