On April 27, the meeting of Russian Geographic Society chaired by Russian President V.V. Putin took place in its headquarters.
The meeting was attended by Russian Geographical Society Presidents S.K. Shoygu, Chair of the Council of Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation V.I. Matvienko, Head of the Presidential Administration S.B. Ivanov, St. Petersburg Governor G.S. Poltavchenko, Moscow Mayor S.S. Sobyanin, RGS Board of Trustees members and honored guests. Saratov Region was represented by Saratov State University Rector, member of RGS Academic Council Presidium A.N. Chumachenko.
Board of Trustees Chair V.V. Putin opened the meeting highlighting the importance of RGS work in the Great Patriotic War Victory anniversary year. “Some RGS projects are included in the official program of celebration events. This is very important and honorable. This highlights the significance of RGS and gives credit to its work in studying the war history and keeping historic memory”.
V.V. Putin awarded RGO Constantine medals for honorable service to war veterans-geographers G.M. Lappo and Yu.G. Simonov.
At the meeting, the participants discussed the plans for year 2015 which is also RGS anniversary year: RGS is preparing some big projects and different campaigns and exhibitions. RGS is organizing its first photo contest for all photography and Russia lovers.
Then V.V. Putin awarded some grants. Saratov State University is among 2015 grantees with its project “Spatial-temporal Model of Ukek Medieval City”. SSU scientists plan to create a 3D model and digital maps of architecture and city planning of Golden Horde settlement Ukek.
SSU Rector A.N. Chumachenko said the project implementation will help further understanding of Russia’s development and drawing attention to a unique object of Ukek medieval city. “The project aims at promoting local history and attitude of care towards our nature and historical heritage”, said the Rector.
The idea of creating a 3D model of Ukek was supported by Saratov Region Governor and RGS Saratov Branch Board of Trustees Chair V.V. Radaev.
