SUMMARY OF THE CHAPTER ACTIVITIES


1. Conferences information:

The Chapter participated in technical and financial co-sponsorship of 3 conferences:
1) XIV Saratov Winter School–Seminar on Microwave Electronics and Radio Physics has been held on February 3-8, 2009 in Saratov. Such schools have been holding every third year since 1970 giving a unique opportunity for presentation and discussion of broad topics related to vacuum microwave electronics. The XIV School was organized by Saratov State University (SSU) with technical and financial cosponsorship of IEEE Saratov/Penza Chapter.

  • IEEE members actively participated in organization of the School. Prof. D.I. Trubetskov served as Conference Chairman, Prof. Yu.P. Sharaevsky, Prof. N.M. Ryskin, Prof. S.P. Kuznetsov and Dr. S.P. Morev served as members of the Program Committee. Prof. Yu.I. Levin, Prof. Yu. P. Sharaevsky, Prof. N.M. Ryskin and Dr. Maria A. Malugina served as members of the Local Organizing Committee.
  • Nearly 100 participants from many regions of Russia (Moscow, St.-Petersburg, Saratov, Tomsk, Nizhny Novgorod, etc.), and foreign quests from Belarus, Ukraine and the USA.
  • Nearly 30 of them — postgraduate students, young scientists and engineers from Saratov universities, academic institutions and industrial companies.
  • 27 plenary lectures reviewing topical problems of theory, simulation and technology of vacuum tubes, high-power microwaves, vacuum microelectronics, microwave electrodynamics, nonlinear science and its application to microwave electronics.
  • 20 talks and 36 posters presented by conference participants.
  • Volume of abstracts has been published and distributed at the conference. Special issues of the Russian journals “Applied Nonlinear Dynamics” and “Radiophysics and Quantum Electronics” with selected papers presented at the conference were published in 2009.
  • Financial support from the Chapter was $ 800.

2) Fourth conference for young scientists “Nanoelectronics, Nanophotonics and Nonlinear Physics”, Saratov, September 5–9, 2009. The conference was hosted by Saratov Branch of the Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics, Russian Academy of Science (IRE RAS) with technical and financial co-sponsorship of IEEE Saratov–Penza Chapter.

  • The conference was attended by Russian IEEE Section Vice-Chair Prof. S.A. Nikitov who met with the Saratov/Penza Chapter Officers and discussed current activities and future plans of the Chapter.
  • 4 IEEE members: Prof. B.D. Zaitzev, Prof. N.M. Ushakov, Prof. D.I. Trubetskov, and Prof. S.P. Kuznetsov served as members of the Program Committee. Prof. N.M. Ryskin (Chapter Chair) and Dr. O.E. Glukhova (Vice-Chair) also served as Session Co -Chairs.
  • IEEE Member Dr. Irene E. Kuznetsova chaired the Local Technical Committee.
  • Conference program included 10 Plenary Lectures presented by invited speakers, 49 talks and 26 posters presented by young scientists and students.
  • The presentations were divided in 5 sessions: “Micro and nanoelectronics, nanomaterials and nanostructures”, “Optics and nanophotonics”, “Acousto and magnetoelectronics”, “Nonlinear physics”.
  • Nearly 120 participants attended the conference including guests from many Russian universities and research institutions.
  • The book of abstracts was published and distributed at the conference.
  • Financial support from the Chapter was $ 500.

3) School “Nonlinear Days in Saratov” for young scientists, postgraduate, undergraduate and pre-college students, November 16–18, 2009. Such schools has been organized each year since 1998 by Saratov State University (SSU) with technical and financial co-sponsorship of Saratov/Penza IEEE Chapter.

  • Chairman: Prof. Dmitry I. Trubetskov (IEEE member)
  • IEEE members Prof. Y.I. Levin, Prof. Y.P. Sharaevsky and Prof. N.M. Ryskin served as Organizing Committee members responsible for technical program.
  • 17 talks and 29 posters were presented by undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • The volume of conference full-text papers will be published in early 2010.
  • Financial support from the Chapter was $ 500.

2. Chapter Workshop information:

1) On September 24, 2009 Saratov/Penza IEEE Chapter hold its annual Workshop “Electromagnetics of Microwaves, Submillimeter and Optical Waves”. Since 2004 this workshop has been held as a part of the International School on Optics, Laser Physics, and Biophysics “Saratov Fall Meeting” (http://optics.sgu.ru/sfm/2009) organized in cooperation with Saratov SPIE Chapter.

  • 13 IEEE Members and 8 guests attended the workshop.
  • 2009 Chapter activity report was presented by the Chapter Chair, Prof. N.M. Ryskin.
  • 7 talks, 1 poster, and 2 Internet reports were presented, concerning various topics of electronics and microwave electrodynamics.
  • Chapter expenses were $ 200.

4. Other Chapter activities:
• A book of collected papers “Modeling in Applied Electrodynamics and Electronics” Issue 9 (Saratov University Press, Saratov, 96 p., ISSN 1816-8221) was published. Such books has been published each 1-2 years since 1998. Editor in Chief is Prof. M.V. Davidovich (Chapter Vice-Chair). Associate Editor is Prof. N.M. Ryskin (Chapter Chair). The book contains 8 research papers devoted to various problems of electromagnetic theory, simulation of microwave technique (waveguides, resonators, etc.), and vacuum and solid-state electron devices.
Chapter expenses were $ 450.
