On 195th Chernyshevsky’s Anniversary, SSU Staff and Students Laid Flowers at His Monument
Today, on the 195th anniversary of a publicist, scholar, writer, and social activist Nikolay Chernyshevsky, there was held an annual ceremony of laying flowers at his memorial at the Resurrection Cemetery.
It was organised by the director of one of the first memorial museums of the country – the Chernyshevsky Museum-Estate Elena Manova. She noted that the philosopher’s legacy was still studied, because he glorified our city far beyond its borders.
The memory was honoured by the staff of cultural institutions and universities of Saratov. From Saratov State University, the ceremony was attended by Vice-Rector for Secondary Vocational Education and Social Work Olga Nesterova, the staff of the Institute of History and International Relations, an employee of the SSU History Museum Daria Makhrova. The memorable event was joined by Rector of the Saratov State Academy of Law Ekaterina Ilgova, Director of the Cultural and Educational centre, SSTU, Natalia Obrezha.
The meeting was attended by a Chernyshevsky’s descendant – his great-great-grandson Pavel Chernyshevskii. ‘I am pleased to visit the monument to my great-great-grandfather once again. Every year on July 24, it has already become a tradition to honour his memory. I would like to thank the staff of the estate museum and all those involved in preserving the memory of my grandfather. If Nikolyi Gavrilovich could have looked at our reality now, he would have been proud of the people who made his dreams come true,’ Pavel Chernyshevskii said and recalled that before the museum had had only one room, and the staff had consisted of few people.
In the end, the ceremony members laid flowers at Chernyshevsky’s monument and the graves of his descendants, which are located behind the monument-arch.
It is worth noting that this year Saratov State University celebrates the 100th anniversary of the naming after Nikolay Chernyshevsky.
