Books by SSU Scholars – Prize-Winners of 2022 Best Books Regional Contest

There have been announced the winners of the 2022 Best Books annual regional contest at the final meeting of the commission under the regional Ministry of Information and Mass Communications.

According to the results of the last three rounds of voting in the Best Book Design nomination, the winner was the Saratov Volga Region in the Era of Peter I book, author – Professor of the Department of Russian History and Archaeology Sergei Mezin. The work was published in Volga LLC publishing house for the anniversaries: the 350th anniversary of the birth of Emperor Peter I and the 300th anniversary of his visit to Saratov.

The author focuses on the history of our city, which in Peter's time turned into the largest commercial and commercial city of the Lower Volga. The travels of Peter I on the Volga in 1695 and 1722 are considered. Special essays are devoted to Petrovsk and the towns that were formerly part of Saratov Region – Tsaritsyn and Dmitriyevsk (Kamyshin).

Professor of the Department of the Russian Language, Speech Communication. and Russian as a Foreign Language Olga Myaksheva took the third place in the Scientific and Popular Scientific Book nomination for the I'm Not Laughing – I'm Scared book (SSU publishing house).

The monograph is devoted to the study of children's mastery of the native language system and speech ability. The “object” of scientific observations are three children, and the subject is their speech development, taking into account age, gender, individual and mental differences. Being a specialist in the field of studying the systemic properties of language, speech and stylistic features of speech communication, the author analyses the "material signs" of children's speech formation and explains the specifics of these “signs”.

The Saratov Region During the Crimean War scientific book (SSU publishing house) was awarded the third place in the Best Book on the History of the Fatherland and Local History nomination. The author is Associate Professor of the Department of Russian History and Archaeology Victor Totfalushin. The book highlights the impact of the Crimean War on the social everyday life of Saratov Volga Region, examines the degree of participation of the local population in the organisation of resistance to the enemy, attempts to determine the level of social tension in the region.

For the Saratov Region during the Crimean War book Victor Totfalushin was awarded the Chernyshevsky All-Russian Prize in research, journalistic, and journal articles in the Scientific Book nomination.

In the Best Textbook special competitive nomination, the prize-winner was the Saratov Region in the Soviet Era textbook (SSU publishing house). The authors of the book are professors of the Institute of History and International Relations Yurii Golub, Aleksei Gumenyuk, and Victor Danilov.

The textbook is devoted to the history of the Saratov Volga region in the Soviet period. Chronologically, it covers the time from 1917 to 1991, which contained large-scale processes that took place in the country, which radically changed the appearance of the region. The publication describes the period of the Civil War, large-scale famine, an attempt to slowly grow into socialism, forced industrialization and mass collectivisation, the Great Patriotic War, post-war reconstruction, easing and reforms of the 1950s and 60s, the stability of “developed socialism” and, finally, “perestroika”, which led to the collapse of the Soviet system.

This year, 59 book publications from 18 participants took part in the competitive selection, including 6 book authors, 12 publishing houses and publishing organizations of the region. The award ceremony of the winners of the Best books of the Year regional contest will be held as part of the Volga Wave book festival-fair. All winners will receive cash prizes and diplomas.
