The university regretfully informs that Sergei Marutsky passed away at the age of 105.
He was born in the village of Korobino, Smolensk Region, on the embankment of the Dnieper. There were seven children in his family – five brothers and two sisters. In 1928, the Lenin collective farm was organised, and Sergei Marutsky's father was elected as its chair. In 1928, at the age of 10, Sergei went to school, graduated from the 4th grade. After that, he was attached by his father to graze horses. Sergeш graduated from the 7th grade in 1935. In 1939 he graduated from the electrical engineering college.
After the beginning of the Soviet-Finnish War, in December 1939, it was decided to organise a 6-month training course for artillery platoon commanders in the 1st Leningrad Artillery School in order to train cadets of the Moscow Military Electrotechnical School and the Leningrad Electrotechnical School there. Thus, Sergei Marutskii began studying artillery. When the Soviet-Finnish War ended in March 1940, and the cadets did not complete a full course of training, it was decided to train them as usual. In 1941, by order of the Minister of Defence, Sergei Marutskii was promoted to the rank of lieutenant, and he was sent to serve as a platoon commander of the 28th Howitzer Artillery Regiment. On June 22, 1941, Marutskii entered the first battle with the fascists on the Northwestern Front. He participated in defensive and attacking battles. In 1942, he was wounded. After treatment in the hospital, he fought on the Leningrad Front, participated in breaking the siege of Leningrad. After the war, he graduated from the Higher Artillery Officer School.
In 1953, Sergei Marutskii was awarded with the rank of lieutenant colonel, in 1964 – the rank of colonel.
In 1953, he joined the Military Department of Saratov State University. Sergei Marutskii trained artillery platoon commanders from students of all the faculties.
He talked with students a lot and began conversations about the war with stories about battles in which he himself participated. On June 22, 1941, he met Hitler's soldiers with fire from 152-millimeter howitzers near the city of Shaulyai. Marutskii's artillery platoon was part of Colonel Ivan Chernyakhovsky's division. The Chernyakhovites were engaged in a life-or-death struggle in the outskirts of Leningrad.
For his heroic deeds, Sergei Marutskii was awarded with the medal For Courage and two orders – Red Star and Two-Grade Patriotic War.
The university veterans will always remember Sergei Marutskii as a strict and fit person, clearly performing all the tasks, but at the same time cordial and sincere. His intelligence, ability to talk to people and understand their needs made him an indispensable head of the university local committee.
